Printable Word Search

Word search puzzles (often simply known as “word searches”) are puzzle games normally played using a pen and paper. The player’s goal is to find a number of words hidden in a grid or table of letters. The challenge of the game stems from three factors:

- Firstly, the words can be hidden at any position or orientation within the grid of letters. Words may be vertical (going up, or going down), horizontal (left to right, or right to left) or diagonally (in any of the four diagonal directions).- Secondly, not all letters in the grid may be part of a word. Moreover, given that words can cross and overlap. Combined with the jumble of different orientations and positions, it may be extremely difficult to locate all of the words hidden in the puzzle.- Thirdly, the player may or may not be given a list of words to search for. Usuaully players are in fact given a list, but this is not absolutely necessary - in fact the puzzle is much more difficult in the absence of such a list. Puzzle designers who choose not to provide a word list, do usually give at least a clue as to the type or subject of the words in the puzzle.

While many people enjoy word search puzzles as a leisure activity, it should also not be forgotten that these puzzles can also have educational value, especially in terms of practising spelling and reading. This is because students must knowt the correct spelling of words (along with the learning to work methodically) in order to solve the puzzle.

Creating a word search puzzle by hand is no easy task - it’s a time consuming, trial error process, but, in all honesty, not nearly as much fun as solving these puzzles. One solution is to use your computer to create these puzzles - it then becomes quick and easy - just type a list of words, and with the help of suitable software, a puzzle appears in a flash. Additionally the computer makes it very easy to try out different sizes, shapes and word lists when creating these puzzles.

How You Can Improve Your Word Power Quickly and Easily!

If you want to be a great communicator, do you need to have a great vocabulary?

You might be surprised to learn that a really big vocabulary is not necessary in order to express yourself clearly and to move others with your words.

Some of the most dramatic messages that have ever been uttered in the English language actually used very simple words to stir the blood, or touch the heart.Look at any well-known passage in the Bible. Chances are that the passage does not rely on sophisticated words to create its power.Think of Lincoln’s Gettysberg Address. Although President Lincoln spoke in a style that is very different from the way we usually speak today, his words still have the power to move us deeply with their clarity and their deep emotion. During the darkest days of World War II, Winston Churchill’s rousing speeches to the British people used very simple, common, powerful words to successfully ignite the courage and determination of his people.

So if it’s possible to communicate effectively without using a lot of very big words, why should we bother to try to expand our vocabulary? The reason is that learning new words expands our understanding and improves our “mental muscles”. Every new word we learn entices our mind to stretch into new areas.

When we have a larger bank of words to draw on, we improve our ability to think and express ourselves. Our thinking will become more fluid and supple, and we will understand more of the world around us and within us, when we have a larger vocabulary. In the modern world the ability to use words effectively is often highly rewarded.

The English language has an enormous number of words, perhaps more than half a million of them. Most people however, use a vocabulary of just a few thousand common words on a daily basis. It is possible to get by in the English language with a limited number of words, but you expand your options as you expand your vocabulary. When you understand very few words, you are limited in your ability to learn new information.

If you want to increase your vocabulary, there are many approaches you can use. One good way is to read books or articles that are slightly more difficult than what you are accustomed to. When you come across a word you don’t know, see if you can figure out its meaning from the context. Look at the way the word is made up, with its letters and syllables. Does it remind you of any words you already know? What parts of it are familiar?

Many words in the English language are made up of common roots they share with other words. You may be able to deduce the meaning of the new word from the way the syllables are put together and the way it is used. You should consult a dictionary to be sure.

If you come across a word you don’t understand during the course of a lecture or a conversation, you can ask someone to explain the meaning of the word. Many people are reluctant to do this because they are afraid of exposing their ignorance by asking.

It is occasionally true that other people may choose to look down on you if you confess that you don’t understand a certain word. On the other hand, they may be happy to teach you something new. If you decide you don’t want to ask anyone else for the meaning of words you don’t know, be sure to make a note of those new words and look them up later.

Should you try to learn new words directly from a dictionary? It depends on your learning style and your preference. Some people will become bored very quickly while reading a dictionary, while others will find it fascinating.

All dictionaries are not alike, and you may find a certain version far more useful than the rest. Good dictionaries will do more than just give a definition of a word. Some will show you an example of the word used in a sentence. Often they will show you alternate spellings, and give the plural forms of nouns and the past tense of verbs. Most dictionaries will show you correct pronunciation. Some will tell you the historical derivation of the word. Many English words have their roots in ancient Anglo-Saxon, French, or German.

Language is always evolving and new words are being created every day. New words can come from technology, from scientific discoveries, from other languages, from pop culture, and from the streets.

When learning new vocabulary, you can better integrate it into your brain if you actively involve yourself in the learning process.

When you encounter a new word, write out a definition of it in your own words, and write one or more sentences using the new word in context. Visualize the word in its printed form. Say the word out loud, and spell it out loud. Say a sentence out loud that uses the new word. Make up an image in your mind that will help you remember the word. If you make the image funny or bizarre, you will probably remember it better.

To improve your use of language and your ability to think, practice summarizing the theme of an entire article or book using just one or two paragraphs. After you have read an article or book, try writing out two different versions summarizing your ideas. Do one version using very simple, everyday words. Make it as clear and simple as you possibly can while still maintaining accuracy. Do another version that uses very complex sentences and advanced vocabulary, like you imagine a university professor might write.

This will give your brain a good work-out and increase your verbal and mental flexibility.

If you are committed to expanding your vocabulary, how many new words should you try to learn in a day? It’s up to you. Just two new words a day will add up to more than 7000 words in ten years. Ten words a day would add 36,000 words in ten years.

Once you have learned a lot of new words, should you work them into your conversation every chance you get? The kind of vocabulary you use should always be appropriate to the context in which you are writing or speaking. For example, if you are speaking to a group of high school dropouts you may want to use different words than if you are speaking to a group of scientists.

Don’t use an impressive vocabulary merely as a means of showing off, always using big words when small ones would do. People can often intuitively feel when you are using fancy words merely for effect, and not because you need them to communicate.

But if your new vocabulary really has become a part of you and has a useful place in your writing and conversation, by all means, go ahead and use it!

Condolence Words, Sample Letter

Nothing in life seems to prepare us for writing words of condolence to those who have just lost a loved one. There is no school, that I’m aware of, that has as part of its curriculum how to write letters of condolence or sympathy. On the other hand, I suppose writing this type of letter is one that we would hope we never have to write but that hope is farthest from the truth.

Many years ago, I had to write my first letter of sympathy to my best friends’ mother. Sure, I could have avoided it; after all, I was one going to be one of the pall bearers and would have the opportunity to speak with her at the funeral. And, it wasn’t as if I wasn’t used to writing; I had to write on a daily basis as part of my job. The truth is that I could hardly say a word to his mother at the funeral; my mouth wouldn’t work, tears welled in my eyes every time I attempted to say anything. So, I was glad I decided to write to his mother. But, the right words, and even the beginning of the letter escaped me. How do you put in writing something so personal where your own loss is somewhat akin to the loss felt by a mother? You know the kind of friend I mean; one with whom you had an immediate connection, one who was there for you no matter what, one who never asked for anything in return except your friendship. And, to make matters even worse, my best friend was only thirty-two years old having died unexpectedly from a burst aneurism.

Here is part of what I wrote; I won’t use her real name or my friends. I hope these words help you to express your feelings of condolence.

“Dear Elizabeth:

How can I ever express my deepest hurt and sadness at Ben’s death? How can I ever imagine what you feel, how you hurt, what loss you feel? My words, although inadequate, can only reflect my own deepest sorrow for I long for Ben to be with us both right now hoping upon hope that all of this is only a very bad dream.

Ben was more than my best friend; he was part of my family. He was always involved in my life, my dreams, my fun, and shared moments where we reveled in boy like antics. As the years past and we both graduated, I had to move to another city. But, how much joy it was to see Ben at my door ready to spend what time he could before driving back home. As I look back, those weekends were some of my happiest moments because we were able to continue building a friendship, a camaraderie I never knew could exist to this extent, and to be part of each others’ aspirations for the future.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of Ben. His smile, his laugh, and his easy way with any people we both knew. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like him. I wish upon wish that he could be here. I miss him greatly. But, at least I have him captured in my heart, and have countless pictures of him and me throughout the years. I would gladly share these pictures with you, and I have sent some along with this note for you to treasure as well.

You can be proud forever of Ben; I know he loved you deeply. He always spoke of you with a gentleness of spirit, and with warmth obviously felt from the heart.

His spirit, his kindness, and my gratefulness that I had these years together with Ben will forever be part of my life, as much as I know that he will be with you.

My deepest sympathy, Ben’s friend,”

I Need To Write A Sympathy Letter

One of the most difficult things in life is to find the proper words to express your sympathy to those in need. Often, as we know, verbal expressions of sympathy to those who have just lost a loved one whether that be a wife, husband, son, daughter, baby, close relative as a sister-in-law, or brother-in-law, or aunts or uncles, or grandparents, or friends are often forgotten in those very early moments of grief. A letter of sympathy or condolence, on the other hand, is something tangible, and long appreciated.

While we probably have offered verbal assistance, or condolences, a letter of sympathy can convey our empathy in more substantial terms. There is something special about committing your concerns, sympathies, and assistance in writing for this expression remains a testimony to your genuine concern. The letter of sympathy that you write shouldn’t be too long (no more than a page), and it could even contain a favorite quote that helps to express your feelings; or you can recount happy events shared, or cherished characteristics, or acts of kindness that were done for you by that person.

The best style is a hand-written note showing the recipient that you are expressing your true condolences in a personal manner. Include your initial expression of sympathy for their loss; add a personal comment about the person who died, for example, a kindness shown to you, the value you placed on their friendship or how much they will be missed by others who knew them. If you offer to help in anyway, make your expression of help real; for example, are you able to speak with them by phone no matter what time of day or night, are you offering to come and be with them over the next few days or weeks, are you willing to assist them in monetary ways until the estate is settled, for example, money for the funeral, flowers for the funeral home. Make sure you include your home phone number, or cell number, and/or email.

Notes of sympathy should also include your full signature that includes your surname so your note is not confused with anyone else’s who has the same first name.

Persons in grief often have a number of friends or relatives with them during the first few days of mourning but most of these friends or relatives have to return to their own lives or schedules. A letter of sympathy, however, is there for those grieving to grasp, hold, and re-read as necessary to aid in their comfort, or to know you really mean to help in any way possible, or even to add to their memories of their loved one.

Don’t hesitate to write that letter of sympathy. Your expression of sorrow, your commitment to help, and your loving kind words will help those who have unfortunately lost a love so close.

Sympathy Cards - A Message From The Heart

Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak
whispers the o’er-fraught heart and bids it break.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616)When someone you know loses a loved one, the simple, thoughtful gesture of writing a sympathy card or condolence letter can bring an untold measure of comfort to the bereaved. In the quest to find the perfect words of condolence for a sympathy message, however, many people become overwhelmed and may avoid writing altogether.

If this should happen to you, begin by accepting the fact that no matter how carefully you choose your words, your condolences will not make everything better – nothing can do that. But a thoughtful, sincere sympathy message, written from the heart, can be a soothing balm, allowing the bereaved to feel your love and support and know that she is not alone in her sorrow.

When is the best time to send a sympathy card?

The best time to send a sympathy card is as soon as you learn of the death. Expressing your condolences will be easier and more natural when you spontaneously share your feelings. You may choose to send your sympathy message in the form of a store-bought sympathy card, a condolence letter handwritten on personal stationery, or one of our sympathy ecards, but whichever method you choose, be sure to include a personal message.

Avoid platitudes and judgmental statements

As you write, avoid the use of platitudes – they’re seldom helpful, and they may cause even more pain to the bereaved, who is raw with emotion. Presumptive statements that may be perceived as judgmental, like “it’s for the best” or “it was God’s will,” or any form of “you should” or “you will,” no matter how well intended, may provoke anger or resentment.

Make sure your sympathy message is genuine and sincere

Also, resist the temptation to say “I know how you feel.” Even if you’ve shared a similar experience – such as the sudden and tragic death of a loved one in an accident, for example – it’s important to remember that everyone grieves differently.

The only feelings you can be sure of are your own. A sympathy message that states something like, “I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Jim’s untimely death” is more sincere, and your willingness to share your own feelings will help the bereaved to cope with hers.

Why not include a treasured memory?

If you personally knew the deceased, consider writing about a treasured memory to let your grieving friend know how his loved one touched your life. Name the qualities you will always remember when you think of the deceased, such as a sparkling wit, unwavering courage, or profound kindness. Above all, be genuine. If you didn’t know the deceased well, focus on your bereaved friend, and let him know that you are there for him.

Keep your sympathy message simple

It’s a good idea to keep your sympathy message simple. Offer to help if you can, but be specific. An invitation to “Call me if you need anything” is likely to be ignored. “I’d be glad to baby sit or run errands to give you a break. I’ll call next week to see how I can help,” on the other hand, is far more useful – and your friend is more likely to accept your offer of assistance.

The act of writing a sympathy card or letter of condolence builds a bridge of communication, opening the door for your friend to share her grief. When she’s ready, it may be easier for her to speak to you about her sorrow because you generously shared the gift of yourself in your sympathy message.

Pleasing the Pampered Pussycat - How to Treat Kitty Like the Royalty That He Is

As cat owners, it is our duty to show our pets how much we love them as much as possible. There are a multitude of ways to stimulate your cat’s mind and keep him purring. Over a lifetime of cat ownership, here are ways that have worked well for me.

Cardboard boxesIf you want to make your cat’s day, just go get a cardboard box and put it in front of him. He’ll really be in kitty bliss if you give him two or more. There is something about cardboard that just attracts cats like a a magnet. In pet stores, you’ll see cat scratchers made out of cardboard, permeated with catnip. Anything with cardboard is a hit with most cats. Have you ever seen your cat try to squish his big, furry body into a small box? Why they like to do this, I’ll never know, but it is really funny to watch. Whenever I order anything from Amazon, the product inside is for me, and the three cats fight over who gets the box. Whether tipped on its side or upright, it doesn’t matter. If they can sink their claws or their bodies into them, they will be very happy.

Catnip plant

Laser pointer

Cats love to chase anything, it’s in their instinct. If you start wiggling the light of a laser pointer on the wall, expect kitty to come charging, in full “hunt” mode. My deaf cat, Beau, is sensitive to shadows and light. He watches anything moving on the wall with total interest. He will jump and dance against the walls for hours trying to get that laser light, if allowed to. Make sure not to shine the laser light in your cat’s eyes, though, because it can hurt him. Just shine it on the wall and watch the cat version of the “Nutcracker Ballet” begin.

Dried catnip is ok, but a whole plant is even better and fresher. The thing is, you will have to put a cage around it until it grows big enough to survive the assault of a hungry cat. Put it in a pot or garden, anchor the cage around it, and pick fresh leaves off to give to your cat. If winter is coming and you are in a cold climate, cut the plant back somewhat and hang the stems upside down, to dry them indoors. Put them up high and out of reach of your cat, or he will most definitely come when you aren’t looking and chow the whole thing down in one attempt.

Remotely controlled toy cars

On Ebay, I found a small, remote-controlled version of a Mini Cooper and bought it, to amuse the cats. And did it ever deliver. This little toy traveled fast, and the cats followed along, eyes bugging out of their heads, totally awestruck that this new thing was loose in the house! They are never bored whenever we get the toy car out; it’s something we do occaisionally, to keep them completely entertained. Whatever the remote controlled toy, choose one that cannot hurt your pet. The smaller, the better. The car toy we have is only about two inches long. Little, but mighty.

Super balls

On hard surfaces, super balls can’t be beat. Make sure to only use ones that are big enough, smaller ones could be swallowed by your pet, so get one that is bigger than his mouth. Fast movement is seductive to cats, they see something small moving fast, and they think “prey!”

Those really big rubber bands for workouts - not regular rubber bands!

You can buy huge rubber bands for working out your legs, sold in the exercise equipment areas of stores or online. Just shoot the band across the room like you would a little rubber band, and watch kitty go after it. My one cat used to fetch it, just like a dog, and bring it back to me. He loved it, dragged it all around the apartment and talked with it still in his mouth. He felt like “big cat of the jungle” when carrying it. Great toy but get only the big rubber bands, don’t ever use little ones, since they can be swallowed. When considering toys, always keep the safety of your pet in the front of your mind. Some toys are best used only when you are present. Better to be safe than sorry.

Cat condos

Cat condos, also called cat trees, are great for any cat who likes to climb to the highest point in any room. To keep kitty from balancing himself on the refrigerator, stereo speakers or worse, try a cat condo. My one cat used to get himself into trouble by knocking things off of shelves, or trying to jump up on the kitchen range hood. To combat this, I got the tallest, most sturdy cat condo possible on Ebay. As I put it together, all three cats gathered to watch. Somehow they knew this thing was theirs. And now, it is a cat magnet. There is at least one cat on it at all times. Get one with the largest surfaces possible. My cat sleeps at the top, or as we call it, the “penthouse,” with his tail hanging off the edge. Maybe sometimes a foot hangs off. Sometimes paws are sticking out in all directions. If your cats are big, it is important to make sure they can sleep like this on the top of the tree without being too cramped. They will love you for it.

Try a few new enhancements to your cat’s life. If they get tired of a toy, then put it away for awhile, then bring it back later. Chances are, they just needed a little variety. My cats’ toys are brought out at different times, so they don’t tire of them. It works to do this, my 15-year old cat still loves to play like a kitten.

The best way to spoil your cat, of course, is to give him your attention. Skritch his head, behind his ears and talk to him. He will melt like butter. By trying different methods of entertainment for your cat, you are adding to his life and to your own. Be creative and think of other ways that will give kitty a little “quality time.” In the end, you will have a purring, happy cat for the duration of his furry little life.
